USEFUL INFORMATION

On our webpage we avoid the different kind of demography, economy etc. details about Hungary, as they can be found on other web pages easily. We would rather like to share useful advices here with people who plan to travel to Hungary.

- From London Stansted you can fly to Lake Balaton directly, with Ryanair. On this way you can save another 2 hour car travelling, so money too.

  • If you hire a bike, you are advised to lock it wherever you leave it, as bike-stealing happen quite often in Hungary. Other sorts of thefts are also known here, for example purse-lifting at crowded places, or stealing of the unattended belongings at the open air swimming-pools, so you are advised to keep careful eyes on your properties. Please let us remind you that these thefts do happen in western countries too, so we do not want to deter anyone to travel to Hungary, we are only offering some more attention.

  • Though there are regular destructions, you can always meet some unexpected cheeky mosquitoes near the lakes. It can be very helpful to use electrical mosquito repellent in the flat, and mosquito repellent oil, spray or cream on your skin at night time.

  • In Hungary, the wetness of the air is lower, so the amount of the pollen and dust in the air is higher, than in Great Britain.

  • Though it is a traffic rule that the drivers must stop as soon as they notice someone stepping onto the zebra-cross, it is not a habit, that’s why you are advised to be very careful as a walker, or a bike rider. Unfortunately some of the drivers are aggressive, inpatient or careless. Because of the high number of the bike-riders, sometimes you can notice a kind of pushing between them and the drivers for the possession of the roads.

  • Most of the Hungarian accommodations are perfectly suit to the western requirements, guests can often meet aesthetically or hygienically higher supplied accommodations, than some of the Great-Britain guesthouse-, hotel-, or bed and breakfast rooms. But unfortunately in some of the rooms you can still find the 90’s furniture left behind, even if the hotel itself performs high quality. There are just as much insects or spiders in Hungarian buildings as in British ones, so you don’t have to be afraid of invasions, or the appearance of awful specimens.

  • Most of the Hungarian dishes are traditionally greasy and spicy, so you are advised to be careful with amounts. The same can be advised about the wines, some of them effect in an unexpected moment, as their bouquet can easily make us forget about their strength. Unfortunately some of the restaurant owners or waters or waitresses (who knows which one) are desperate to make a ridiculous profit out of tourists, so it could happen, that there is an unusually high amount on the bill, which can be even the multiple of the real price. Our offer is to keep a menu until the ends of the lunch or dinner, then compare the items with the items of the bill. If anything seems suspicious, just ask to see the manager.

  • You can find Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, Coop, Spar in Hungary, as much as in Great-Britain, but their stock can be different from the Great-Britain stores.

  • The water of the swimming-pools is clear, rotated. The water of the lakes certainly doesn’t look clear, but it of course doesn’t mean the contamination of the water, but caused only by organisms – like alga, mud, silt – or sand in the water, that are harmless, some of them have even good influence for the skin. The water of the lakes is perfectly suitable for swimming.

  • Sometimes – though it is most of the time not extreme – the weather can change suddenly. Rarely there can be 10-15 °C difference day by day, so a hot Summer day can turn into a cool spring day or the other way. Stronger storms can appear in the Summer months, but if we are not in the lake or on the coast, then they can’t do us any harm. Thunder and lightening are the accompanying of even the smallest storms, but sometimes they are just omens, and the real storm keeps out. There can be hail rarely. But largely the season waits for us with beautiful hot Summer days.
